What is STRATA?
STRATA is a pillow made of one hundred individually removable layers. You begin at the full stack and remove layers, one morning at a time, until your neck is quiet. The count at which you stop is your Strata Number™. It is yours for as long as your neck agrees.
Why one hundred layers?
Fewer layers made each step too large. More layers made the Protocol too long. Ninety-nine felt unfinished. One hundred is the smallest number of layers that lets every neck we have measured find its place in small, equal steps. Our founder has written about this at length in the Journal.
How tall is STRATA?
At the full stack, 225.6 mm, uncompressed. At the median Number of 52, about 115.5 mm. At a single layer, 3.1 mm, which we do not recommend.
How heavy is it?
The full stack weighs 4.21 kg, including the 126 g cover. It gets lighter every morning. Most sleepers find that symbolic.
Which tier should I choose?
STRATA, with all 100 layers, suits almost everyone. STRATA Lite starts at 40 layers and suits stomach sleepers who are confident their Number is low. STRATA Pro adds twenty Reserve Layers for sleepers who drift. STRATA Twin is two pillows that share one Number, for couples who have checked.
What if I buy STRATA Lite and my Number is over 40?
Then you will reach the top of your stack before you reach your Number. Write to us. We will send the missing layers in order and charge only the difference to STRATA.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. You can spread the cost across up to 36 nightly payments of $0. The full price is due at checkout. The financing is for peace of mind.
Can I choose a different cover?
Yes. STRATA ships in Bone Linen. The Builder offers seven other covers, from Oatmeal Sateen to Ink Silk, and a monogram for $45.
How do I clean STRATA?
The cover is machine-washable at 30°C and should be line-dried in shade. Layers are not machine-washable, not dishwasher-safe and not to be lent. Air them monthly, in order, on a clean, flat surface.
What is the warranty?
Ten years on every layer. Lifetime on your Number. If a layer fails, we replace it. If your Number drifts, we re-engrave your card.
The Protocol
What is a Strata Number™?
Your Number is the layer count at which you wake without neck discomfort on three consecutive nights. Under the Standard Descent, a Number of 52 means you sleep on Layers 1 to 52. The median Number is 52.
How long does it take to find my Number?
94.7% of sleepers find their Number by Night 11. The median is 9 nights. The mean is 11.3, because a small group of very thorough sleepers are still journaling and we would not rush them.
What is the Triple Quiet Rule?
A Number is certified when you wake with no neck discomfort on three consecutive nights at the same layer count. It is the only test. It has been the only test since 2021.
How many layers should I remove each morning?
As many as your Journal suggests, and never more than fifteen. Early in the Protocol, most sleepers remove five to ten. Near their Number, most remove one. Always remove in the morning. A tired neck is an unreliable witness.
Which end of the stack do I remove from?
The bottom. Under the Standard Descent, Layer 100 comes out first. 61.8% of sleepers remove it on the morning after Night 1. It understands.
Can I sleep on 0 layers?
That’s a bed.
What if my Number is 100?
Then you are one of the 0.8% of sleepers who need the full stack. Our Number Integrity team will ask you to repeat the Triple Quiet. They are not doubting you. They would simply like to see it.
My Number changed. Is something wrong?
No. This is Number Drift, and about 14% of sleepers experience it within two years. A new mattress, partner or sleep position is the usual cause. Return to the Journal, adjust, and meet the Triple Quiet again. We will re-engrave your Number Card at no charge.
Do I have to keep the Journal?
Yes. The Journal is how your neck tells you what it thinks. Entries should be written within five minutes of waking, before the day has had a chance to edit them.
Can two people share a Number?
Sometimes. STRATA Twin is made for couples whose Numbers match within two layers. Our Head of Number Integrity reviews every Twin order. She is kind, but she is thorough.
Can I estimate my Number before I order?
Yes. The Number Finder asks eight questions and suggests a Provisional Number. It is an estimate. Only the Triple Quiet can certify a Number.
Layers
Why does Layer 33 squeak?
Layer 33, The Creaking Ledge, squeaks at 2.1 kHz when pressed from the left. We tried to fix it in 2022. 312 sleepers asked for the squeak back. If you would prefer a silent Layer 33, we will send one at no charge.
Why are some layers empty?
Eight layers are Void Layers™, at 13, 30, 50, 64, 77, 87, 91 and 99. They contain nothing, by design. They interrupt the slow stiffening of the stack and give the layers above somewhere to settle.
Can I buy Layer 47 on its own?
Yes. The Keystone is available as a standalone layer for $148. It ships in a linen sleeve with a card explaining exactly where it goes. It is not a pillow on its own.
Can I change the order of the layers?
We advise against it. Each layer is made for its position. A layer out of order is a layer out of context. Advanced sleepers with a documented reason may write to our Head of Layer Pairing.
What should I do with the layers I remove?
Keep them in the Layer Caddy, in order, in case of Number Drift. Removed layers also make a good guest pillow or pet bed. Please do not throw them away. We will take any layer back for reuse.
Can I replace a single damaged layer?
Yes. Every layer can be ordered individually through Sleeper Care. Tell us its number. We will tell you its name.
Shipping
How long does shipping take?
STRATA ships in 3 to 5 business days in a numbered pine crate. Standalone layers ship in 4 days in a linen sleeve.
How much is shipping?
Shipping is free across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. The crate is heavy. That is our concern, not yours.
Do you ship internationally?
Not yet. We ship within the United States only. We are working on it, one country at a time.
Returns
What is the 30-Night Number Guarantee?
If STRATA does not find your Number within 30 nights, return it for a full refund. Return any layer. We’ll ask questions. If you are still journaling on Night 30, the guarantee extends until you meet the Triple Quiet or decide to stop.
How do I return STRATA?
Write to Sleeper Care. We will send a prepaid label and ask you to pack all 100 layers in order, including the ones in the Caddy. The questions take about ten minutes. Most of them are about your neck.
No questions match that yet. Write to us, and it may be the thirty-third.
