Stories

Twelve sleepers. Twelve Numbers.

Every one of them began at one hundred.

These are some of the 28,114 sleepers who have found their Number. They are cellists and steelworkers, stomach sleepers and over-thinkers. Their Numbers range from 7 to 100. Their nights to Number range from 1 to 26. Each of them would like you to know that it was worth it.

Stories are shared with permission and lightly edited for length. Numbers are unedited.1

The twelve sleepers

  1. A cellist with close-cropped hair and gold hoop earrings sits beside her cello case at home in Portland.

    Delphine Okafor-Lund

Cellist · Portland, Oregon · Side sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 9 at 52

“I found it on Night 9. Fifty-two. I didn’t tell anyone for three days in case it heard me.”

Delphine plays cello for four hours a day and had owned eleven pillows in six years. She began the Protocol on a Sunday and kept her Journal on the music stand. By Night 4 she had removed 29 layers. By Night 6, the pressure at the base of her skull had gone. On Night 9 she woke at 52 layers with nothing to report, and then did it twice more. ‘It’s the median,’ she says. ‘I’ve never been the median at anything. I’m unreasonably proud.’

Delphine’s quote appears while a counter runs from Night 1 to Night 9 and a 100-layer stack is removed from the bottom down to 52.

  2. A pastry chef in a chef’s jacket with flour on one sleeve smiles sideways in his New Orleans kitchen.

    Marcus Thibodeaux

Pastry chef · New Orleans, Louisiana · Stomach sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 17 at 12

“Twelve layers. My wife sleeps on sixty-one. We’ve stopped comparing. Mostly.”

Marcus works nights and sleeps face-down ‘like a starfish that has given up’. He removed layers aggressively at first and then, by Night 10, one at a time, because he could feel each one. At 14 layers he was close. At 13 he was closer. At 12 he slept for nine hours and woke without his usual crick. ‘I keep the other 88 in the Caddy,’ he says. ‘Sometimes I open it and look at them. It’s like a library of things I don’t need.’

Marcus’s quote appears while a counter runs from Night 1 to Night 17 and a 100-layer stack is removed from the bottom down to 12.

  3. An actuary with a long straight fringe and wire glasses holds an open journal filled with neat columns.

    Ingrid Solvang

Actuary · Minneapolis, Minnesota · Back sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 23 at 63

“I am an over-thinker. My Number is sixty-three. The layer is called The Over-Thinker. I have chosen to find this validating.”

Ingrid modelled her Protocol in a spreadsheet before Night 1. She added a column for barometric pressure and another for what she’d eaten. She reached 63 on Night 14, removed a layer ‘to test the hypothesis’, put it back on Night 17, and met the Triple Quiet on Night 23. When she learned that Layer 63 is named The Over-Thinker, she sat with that for a while. ‘I’d like it noted that I found my Number,’ she says. ‘I’d also like it noted that I checked it.’

Ingrid’s quote appears while a counter runs from Night 1 to Night 23 and a 100-layer stack is removed from the bottom down to 63.

  4. An architect with a salt-and-pepper beard and a linen shirt holds a rolled drawing under one arm.

    Rafael Quintero-Abbas

Architect · Austin, Texas · Side sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 11 at 37

“Thirty-seven. It turns out the problem was never my neck. It was the sixty-three layers I didn’t need.”

Rafael designs buildings and appreciates a load path. He read the Layer Map on the first night and decided he would end somewhere in the Thermal Stratum. He was right. At 37 he keeps Slow Thaw, the memory foam layer that softens over the first forty minutes, as his last. ‘It’s the right ending,’ he says. ‘Something that gives a little, once you’ve settled in.’ He has framed the Layer Map in his office. Clients ask about it. He tells them.

Rafael’s quote appears while a counter runs from Night 1 to Night 11 and a 100-layer stack is removed from the bottom down to 37.

  5. A retired schoolteacher with a soft white bob and cardigan holds a slice of cake with piped icing.

    June Hollowell

Retired schoolteacher · Savannah, Georgia · Back sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 6 at 71

“Seventy-one. Six nights. My grandchildren made me a cake with the number on it, and I let them think it was my age.”

June taught fourth grade for thirty-four years and approaches the Protocol ‘like a spelling test: you prepare, and then you’re honest’. She removed five layers a morning, like clockwork, and stopped at 71, the layer called Ambition. ‘I’m seventy-four,’ she says. ‘Ambition seems about right.’ She now lends her Protocol Booklet to friends, though never her layers. ‘The card says not to,’ she says, ‘and I believe in following instructions.’ She keeps her removed layers in the Caddy, sorted by stratum, with a handwritten label on each shelf. Her Journal entries are in cursive.

  6. A radio producer in headphones and a striped shirt gestures mid-explanation.

    Theo Marchbanks

Radio producer · Chicago, Illinois · Combination sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 14 at 29

“I sleep in every position, sometimes in one night. Twenty-nine works for all of them. I don’t understand it and I’ve stopped trying.”

Theo moves. His partner describes his sleep as ‘a sort of slow cartwheel’. Combination sleepers take longer under the Protocol, and Theo was no exception, hovering between 31 and 27 for a week. On Night 12 he settled at 29 and kept it. ‘There’s a Void Layer at 30,’ he says. ‘So technically my stack ends just before nothing. I think about that more than I should.’ He has since recorded a short radio segment about the Protocol. It ran at 3 a.m., which he says was the right slot for it.

  7. A paediatric nurse in soft scrubs with a lanyard and a long plait holds a plain ceramic mug.

    Priyanka Velloor

Paediatric nurse · Seattle, Washington · Side sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 8 at 44

“Forty-four. I’ve slept through two night shifts’ worth of sleep in one go. My neck sent a thank-you note.”

Priyanka works twelve-hour shifts and needed a Number quickly. She followed the Protocol with clinical discipline: record within five minutes, adjust, don’t argue. She reached 44, Plumb Line, on Night 6, and met the Triple Quiet on Night 8. ‘I do this for a living,’ she says. ‘Observe, record, adjust. I just never did it for myself.’ Her Number Card is pinned to the corkboard in the staff room. Three colleagues have since ordered. One of them is a 44 as well. They have agreed not to make it a thing, and have made it a thing.

  8. A weathered mountain guide in a knitted beanie holds a thick layered pillow flat under one arm.

    Callum Brightwater

Mountain guide · Denver, Colorado · Back sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 1 at 100

“I slept on all one hundred and woke up perfect. I’ve been told this is rare. I’ve been told this several times.”

Callum is one of the 0.8% of sleepers whose Number is 100. He slept on the Full Stack on Night 1, woke with no discomfort, did it twice more, and submitted his Journal on Day 4. Our Number Integrity team asked him to repeat the Triple Quiet, then asked again. ‘They were very polite,’ he says. ‘But I could tell they wanted to watch.’ He received the Full Stack Developer badge and a handwritten letter from our founder. He keeps the letter in his pack. He keeps all one hundred layers on his bed, where he says they belong.

Callum’s quote appears beside a full 100-layer stack that stays whole from Night 1.

    3. I’ve been told this is rare. I’ve been told this several times.
  9. A litigator with a short natural afro and tailored navy blazer stands with arms crossed, half-smiling.

    Ama Osei-Fairbanks

Litigator · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania · Stomach sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 12 at 19

“Nineteen. I argued with my pillow for twelve nights. The pillow won, which has never happened to me in court.”

Ama is used to being right, and on Night 3 she was certain her Number was 40. Her neck disagreed. She removed layers ‘under protest’ until Night 9, when she reached Rebound Primer, Layer 19, and stopped protesting. ‘There’s a certain dignity in losing to evidence,’ she says. She has since recommended STRATA to two judges, neither of whom she will name. Her Journal, she notes, would be admissible. Every entry is dated, signed and written within five minutes of waking.

  10. A marine biologist with a sun hat pushed back and a waterproof notebook stands against a pale sea.

    Wen Li Castellano

Marine biologist · San Diego, California · Side sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 19 at 58

“Took me 19 nights. Worth it. Layer 33 squeaks.”

Wen Li studies kelp forests and is comfortable with slow processes. Her Protocol took nineteen nights, which she describes as ‘a reasonable tide’. Her Number is 58, The Long Night, a layer added for exactly the kind of sleeper who takes nineteen nights. She keeps Layer 33, the squeaking one, and has decided she likes it. ‘When I turn left, it says hello,’ she says. ‘I’ve started saying it back.’ She logs her nights in a waterproof notebook, the same kind she uses on dives. The tide tables are on the facing page. She has noticed no correlation, and has not stopped looking.

  11. A very tall retired steelworker with a thick moustache and suspenders sits on the edge of a bed with a tall pillow.

    Bartholomew Szabo

Steelworker, retired · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania · Back sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 10 at 86

“Eighty-six. The layer’s called Summit Approach. At my age I’ll take a summit wherever I can find one.”

Bart is six foot five and has never owned a pillow that was tall enough. On Night 1 at 100 layers he said, aloud, ‘finally’. He removed only fourteen layers over ten nights and stopped at 86. His wife, Rosa, is a 23. They do not have a Twin. ‘We tried,’ he says. ‘The Number Integrity people were very kind about it.’ Instead, Rosa sleeps on a STRATA Lite at 23 and Bart sleeps on the full stack at 86. From across the room, he says, their pillows look like a before-and-after photograph.

  12. A doctoral candidate with curly hair in a loose bun and a pencil behind one ear reads in bed.

    Noor Haddad-Pryce

Doctoral candidate, philosophy · Boston, Massachusetts · Stomach sleeper

    Night 1 at 100 → Night 26 at 7

“Seven. Ninety-three layers removed. I’ve written a chapter about it. My supervisor has asked me to stop.”

Noor took twenty-six nights and is proud of each one. She is a stomach sleeper who needs almost nothing, and she approached each removal as a question. At 7 layers she sleeps on The Greeting, Linen Veil, First Breath, The Cool Shoulder, Soft Hello, Ear Commons and Cheekplate, and nothing else. ‘People ask if I wasted ninety-three layers,’ she says. ‘I tell them I needed all of them to know I didn’t need them.’ Her removed layers live in two Caddies at the foot of the bed. She calls them the footnotes.

Noor’s quote appears while a counter runs from Night 1 to Night 26 and a 100-layer stack is removed from the bottom down to 7.
