The Protocol™

Subtract until it’s right.

Five steps. About eleven nights. One Number, for life.

The Protocol is how a pillow of one hundred layers becomes a pillow of exactly the right number. It asks for a few minutes each morning, a pair of tweezers, and the honesty to write down how your neck feels before your coffee has an opinion.

94.7% of sleepers find their Number by Night 11.1

An explainer of the five steps, with a Sleep Journal filling in and a counter falling to 52.
The Protocol. Forty-five seconds, five steps, one Number.

  1. This is the Protocol. It takes about eleven nights.
  2. Night one. Sleep on all one hundred layers.
  3. Your neck will have opinions. Write them down.
  4. In the morning, wake and listen.
  5. Record within five minutes, before your neck forgets.
  6. Then remove what you don’t need, from the bottom.
  7. Eight to twelve layers on the first morning. One on the last.
  8. Repeat until it’s quiet.
  9. Three nights. Not two. Two is a coincidence.
  10. Then you receive your Number.
  11. Your Number is a journey.
  12. Ninety-four point seven percent of sleepers find it by Night eleven.

Five steps.

  1. № 1Step

    Sleep on all one hundred.

Night 1 begins at the Full Stack. Every layer, from The Greeting to The Floor. It will feel tall. That is the point. You cannot subtract from what you have not tried.

Average Night 1 Neck Score: 41.2

  2. № 2Step

    Wake, and listen.

Before you sit up, notice your neck. Is the pressure at the top, near the skull, or lower, near the shoulders? Is it there at all? Write it down. The Journal has a box for this, and a smaller box for your mood, which we do not analyse.

Record within 5 minutes of waking. After 5 minutes, the neck begins to make excuses.

  3. № 3Step

    Remove what you don’t need.

Using the Tweezers of Reflection, remove layers from the bottom of the stack upward. Early on, remove several. As your Neck Score climbs, remove fewer. Place each removed layer in its numbered slot in the Layer Caddy. Never discard a layer. You may want it back.

Most sleepers remove 8 to 12 layers on the first morning and 1 on the last.

  4. № 4Step

    Repeat until it’s quiet.

Each night, sleep. Each morning, listen, record and adjust. When you wake with no discomfort at the same layer count for three consecutive nights, you have met the Triple Quiet Rule.

Three nights. Not two. Two is a coincidence.

  5. № 5Step

    Receive your Number.

Submit your Journal through your account or by post. A Number Integrity specialist reviews it, confirms the Triple Quiet, and registers your Number. Your Number Card is engraved and sent within ten days. Your Number is yours forever. It goes on the card. It goes on the mug.

Your Number is a journey. Layers can go back in. Layers can come out.

The test

The Triple Quiet Rule

A Number is certified when you wake with no neck discomfort on three consecutive nights at the same layer count. This is the only test. It has been the only test since 2021.

  1. 1Night oneQuiet. Same count.
  2. 2Night twoQuiet. Same count.
  3. 3Night threeQuiet. Same count.

  • Stomach Sleeper Sunny

    Stomach

Needs very little and knows it. Usually finds a Number in the first week, after a brief period of disbelief.

  • Side Sleeper Sam

    Side

Keeps Side Sleeper’s Shelf, Layer 48, and nothing below it. A classic.

  • The Over-Thinker

    Back, then side, then back

Removes a layer, puts it back, removes a different one. Gets there. Writes very long Journal entries.

Layer Removal Etiquette.

  1. Remove layers in the morning, never at night. A tired neck is an unreliable witness.
  2. Use the Tweezers of Reflection. Pause before each removal. That is what the name is for.
  3. Remove from the bottom of the stack unless you are an advanced sleeper with a documented reason.
  4. Return every layer to its numbered slot. A layer out of order is a layer out of context.
  5. Do not remove a layer to make a point to someone else.
  6. Never remove more than 15 layers in one morning. The stack needs time to adjust, and so do you.

Afterwards

What to do with removed layers.

A removed layer is not a wasted layer. It is a layer waiting for its next role.

  • 01

    Keep them in the Caddy

Most sleepers keep every removed layer, in order, in case of Number Drift. This is what we recommend.

  • 02

    Make a guest pillow

Your removed layers form a second, shorter stack. Guests who sleep on it have been known to ask about their own Number by breakfast.

  • 03

    Make a pet bed

Micro-Down and wool felt layers make a soft, breathable bed for a cat or small dog. Avoid buckwheat. They will eat it.

  • 04

    Insulate something

Wool felt and gel lattice layers are excellent at managing heat. Sleepers have lined window seats, bread boxes and, in one case, a beehive.

  • 05

    Gift a layer

A single layer, wrapped and numbered, is a thoughtful gift for someone beginning their own Protocol. Include a note. Explain.

How a Number is assigned.

  1. 1You meet the Triple Quiet Rule and submit your Journal.
  2. 2A Number Integrity specialist reads every entry, in order, and confirms three quiet nights at one count.
  3. 3Your Number is entered in the Number Registry under your name and the date of your third quiet night.
  4. 4Your Number Card is engraved by hand in Pellham Ford and posted within ten days.

Numbers are not assigned, chosen or purchased. They are found, and then they are recorded. Two people may share a Number. No one may share a Number Card.
