Layer 47, Alone

For the first time, The Keystone is available on its own. We asked the people who make it what that means, and what it doesn’t.

A single pale memory-foam layer rests on a linen cloth, lit from one side.

Since August, Layer 47 has been available as a standalone layer for $148. It is the first time any STRATA layer has been sold on its own. The announcement was one line on our homepage. The response filled our inbox for a week.

We spent a day at the mill with the people who make it, to understand why one layer should matter so much.

What it is

Layer 47 is called The Keystone. It is a 2.8-millimetre sheet of Gen VII memory foam, poured and cured on Line 2 at Pellham Ford. It weighs 52 grams. It sits in the Keystone Stratum, between Layer 46 and Layer 48, where it does something our engineers describe as “load-bearing in every sense”.

What that means in practice is this. When a sleeper lies down, weight moves down through the stack. Most layers pass that weight along. Layer 47 redistributes it. It spreads the load from the upper stack across the lower stack, evenly, from edge to edge. Take it out and the whole stack notices. Testers who slept on a STRATA with Layer 47 removed, and nothing else changed, reported discomfort by the second night. Most of them could not say why. Several asked if we had moved their bed.

Why sell it alone?

For years, Layer 47 has been our most requested replacement layer. The reasons vary. Some sleepers have worn theirs out, though it takes a long time. Some have pets who found it first. A surprising number simply want a spare.

“People are attached to it,” says Agatha Rennick, who has run the mill floor since 2021. “You get letters about Layer 33 because it squeaks. You get letters about Layer 47 because people are worried something will happen to it.”

Selling it alone means a sleeper whose Keystone is damaged no longer has to wait for a full replacement kit. It ships in four days, in a flat linen sleeve, with a card explaining exactly where it goes.

Who it is for

It is important to say who Layer 47 is not for. It is not a pillow. Sleeping on Layer 47 alone gives a loft of 2.8 millimetres, which is roughly the height of a folded napkin. We do not recommend it.

It is also only useful to sleepers whose Number is 47 or higher. That is about three in five of our sleepers. If your Number is lower, Layer 47 is already in your Caddy, and it is fine there.

On being famous

We asked the team on Line 2 whether it is strange to make a celebrity.

“It’s the same foam as Layer 43 and Layer 63,” says one of the pourers. “Same recipe, same cure. It’s the position that makes it special.” She paused. “I do check it a bit more carefully, though.”

Every Layer 47 is inspected twice, once on Line 2 and once by our Head of Number Integrity, before it is packed. No other layer gets a second inspection, except the Void Layers, which are a separate matter entirely.

Its understudy

There is one more layer worth mentioning. Layer 72, The Understudy, is a reactive latex layer in the Reserve Stratum. It was designed to know every line of Layer 47, in case it is ever needed. Since STRATA launched in 2022, it has never been needed. It remains ready.

We asked whether The Understudy would also be sold alone. We were told, with some firmness, that it is not about The Understudy right now.
